What a day it has been! We had almost 100 people who attended the launch of London's first ever photo competition for homeless people supported by The Royal Photographic Society - the oldest photography society in the world and established since 1853. It goes to prove that even a great British Institution, with a Royal Charter, shares the same belief as Cafe Art in recognising & celebrating the talents of this group of individuals! The iconic St Paul's Cathedral (and one of the most photographed image in London!) generously opened its door of the Wren Suite to us, for free, to provide a marvellous welcome for everyone. On 24th July 2013, Christie’s, the world's largest fine arts auction house, invited a select group of arts-focused nonprofits organisations to collectively introduce their work to employees of Christie’s. They included The Princess Foundation, Chelsea & Westminster, ELBA etc. The aim was to engage potential volunteerism and help support them to execute their missions, share best practices in promoting and accessing the arts, and raise awareness around the power of creative expression and art in society. Café Art could not have hoped for a better supporter from the photographic community and a better venue for the inaugural Café Art photography contest in London to be held on 31st July! Volunteers from the Royal Photographic Society (RPS) will give basic photography training for people affected by homelessness at the official camera handout day in St Paul’s Cathedral.
