Past and Future: May 2016 in MyLondon calendar

We would like to introduce you to the photographer for May: Ioanna Zagkana.

When we first met Ioanna, she was eager to share her story about the day she shot London’s iconic “Gherkin”, 30 St Mary Axe, and St Andrew Undershaft.

“I liked the sky. It was amazing that day,” she said.

And it really was.

When she first moved to London five years ago, Ioanna was a dancer. But an unfortunate accident ended her career, and she fell on tough times.

She found herself living in a shelter in Whitechapel, East London. She has the homeless support service Crisis to thank for their support.

But for Ioanna, Crisis gave her more than a roof over her head when she needed it most. She started going to art groups like Crisis Skylight and Women at the Well, among others.

When we ask her why she wanted to share her perspective of the Gherkin with you, Ioanna replied that not enough people in London live in the present – “we are not grounded,” she said.

She told us that the Gherkin represents the future and the past of London.

By bringing a new perspective to this unique part of the city, she hopes to help Londoners keep their feet on the ground.

2018 MyLondon calendar

We will be launching another crowdfunder to raise money for the the 2018 MyLondon calendar in August 2017. The photos will be taken in early July, the top 20 chosen in mid July and the public will choose the calendar in early August in Spitalfields Arts Market, London.

The 2018 MyLondon calendar will be officially launched on World Homelessness Day, 10 October 2017.

  1. I love this calendar; both the content and the ethics of its production. I would love to give it as a Christmas gift to some family and friends but am worried that I may have found you a little too late ! Can you tell me where I can get hold of them please ?

Also, having checked out the gallery, I adore the work of Daren Buckley and would love to know if he is still producing work ?

    Many thanks

    • Hi Jan,

Happy New Year and really sorry for this late reply. There was a slight problem with our system during the festive break, but it’s now back to normal 🙂
Thanks you for your kind words and support – appreciated. We are pleased to say that, like you, the general public loves the calendar and some have been buying them as Christmas gifts. You can still purchase them by clicking onto the ‘Shop’ section on the top menu bar, followed by the calendar icon. If you have any problems, do get in touch with us.
As for Daren’s work, his sketches was in fact featured in our first calendar back in 2013. He is a talented artist and we do have a few of his pieces to be displayed sometime this year 🙂
Many thanks again, and have a very happy and rewarding year ahead…!

Thank you so much for your support and believe in the project – appreciated! As it’s already half way through the year, it would be unfair for us to charge you full price for the calendars. We would be happy to post you three calendars for the price of 2 (ie you get one free!). Hope that’s OK with you. If you’re still keen, you can go this this link below to buy and pay for the calendars:

  5. How do I pre-order?

  6. What a stunning collection of photos. Yes, I want one of your 2016 calendars. Please advise me how I can buy one. I live in the USA. Thanks so much for what you’re doing.

  7. Do you not ship to the US? I’m in California and want to get a calendar or three. Ack! What’s up with this? Thanks!

  8. So with that kind of m I money you are paying all 100 photographers…the homeless that are using the cameras and not the pictures you use in the calendar…because if not your story is deceptive and you should specifically say you only pay for the photos you use…it changes the entire idea if you are not helping the 100…

    • Dear Barbara,

      Thank you for your query.

The money raised from the selling of the calendar not only pays for the winning prizes, photo exhibition(s), supporting the project (as we do not get any external funding), but more importantly, buying art vouchers to be distributed to the many art groups connected with the programme, that are used by service users. This will, in fact, help not only the 100 photographers, but those artists, who are non-photographers as well.
The 100 photographers were also given a set of all their photos for free, plus £5 for returning the camera back to us.
I hope this answers your query, and let us know if you have any other questions. Thank you.
