My São Paulo!

We are excited to announce that the first international pilot of Cafe Art's photography contest and calendar is happening in São Paulo next week, to be called Minha São Paulo. Following the success of a visit by a delegation to London in April this year, Cafe Art was invited to join a UK delegation with the organisation With One Voice in November, and the contest was added later. The São Paulo city council (the prefeitura) asked if Cafe Art could do a pilot photography contest like the My London project and Paul Ryan will fly to São Paulo on Sunday 1 November a week before the rest of the UK delegation. We are very excited to not only be included...

School’s out! Art’s in!

What better way for a group of energetic and enthusiastic London teenagers to spend their summer holidays, than to sign up to The Challenge Network, and join Cafe Art to learn more about homelessness and the value of art towards their path to recovery. The UK charity contacted Cafe Art to see how we can help with a session to engage these inspiring young adults (Year 11 and 12; and also as part of the Duke of Edinburgh Award & part of the Government's National Citizen Service) to strengthen their local communities. We held a 'theory' event in July whereby they had talks given to them by homelessness support workers & service users, focussing on the value of...

Let the judging commence

What an amazing return rate we had from the camera hand-out at St Paul's. 90%! Yes, a staggering 90%. So a very big thank you to all the participating photographers and their support workers and staff. Without their help, we doubt we would have achieved such an impressive uptake rate. Thank you again! The judging day has been set for today, Thursday 22nd Aug, and Christie's (the world's top art auctioneers) have come to the rescue this time. They opened their doors and provided us with a boardroom for the judges to convene. We have high expectations of the photographers and hence, have put together an impressive line-up of judges for this very difficult job. They...

Camera handout at St Paul’s Cathedral

What a day it has been! We had almost 100 people who attended the launch of London's first ever photo competition for homeless people supported by The Royal Photographic Society - the oldest photography society in the world and established since 1853. It goes to prove that even a great British Institution, with a Royal Charter, shares the same belief as Cafe Art in recognising & celebrating the talents of this group of individuals! The iconic St Paul's Cathedral (and one of the most photographed image in London!) generously opened its door of the Wren Suite to us, for free, to provide a marvellous welcome for everyone. Pret A Manger came to the rescue, as always,...

What can we say, but our heartfelt congratulations to the calendar artists. THEY DID IT! They have shown that given the opportunity, they too can help raise funds for their own art groups, despite during this challenging economic climate. All through their own sheer talent, and nothing else. We hope that this will inspire others in similar circumstances that nothing in life is impossible. Thanks to the various homeless charities who gave them the chance & a safe space to draw and paint, the art group leaders who supported them, and of course, their fellow artists who were with them all of the way. And the general public, ie you!, who believed in them and bought...
