June in 2021 MyLondon calendar “This is Mayfield Lavender Farm. I was just out on a bike ride, and I thought ‘that looks pretty good, especially the phone box in the middle of a field.” Gareth Sell, who uses the pseudonym Hugh Gary for his photography, is an Army veteran and was helped into housing by the West London Mission’s hostel for veterans. Having served for 10 years, including two tours in the Middle East, left service in 2013. His story sadly echoes that of many, acknowledging that “a lot of the homeless people in London are ex-service.” Since being homeless Gareth has followed a path of education, gaining a BA (Hons) in Photography during which he had success in the MyLondon calendar. After which he has gone on to complete a Postgraduate Certificate in Education from UCL’s Institute of Education and a Master’s in Photography from UAL’s London College of Communication. Now living in his own flat in South London, Gareth is teaching and advises NHS London Veterans’ Service as a director of a partner organisation, the Veterans Community Group which supports veterans with mental health. 2nd Place (People’s Choice) 2016. In 2017 MyLondon calendar.
